Funny you should say that. When doing the research on Verbena I was wondering just that. What was it about this plant that made the ancients think, hey, this one is magic?
I wonder if it starts with some sort of truth? For instance, I was reading about the common poppy and one folk tale (as I expect you know!) is that picking one under certain conditions will make you go blind. But apparently there is an association between over exposure to that colour of scarlet red and a higher likelihood of progressive blindness. Not a very cheerful example but a recent one that comes to mind. I love the intricacies that developed with the verbena love potions though 😍. Brilliant stuff.
